Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Set up and maintain output device
   • Devices are set up to manufacturer’s specifications and enterprise standards
   • Outputmedium is calibrated by conducting exposure tests using appropriate software and hardware
   • Calibration is evaluated and necessary adjustments made to output device
2. Adjust and manipulate images/files
   • Electronic files are evaluated as to suitability for output
   • Appropriate output resolution is set
   • Appropriate screen angle and dot type are set according to job specifications
   • Appropriate colour profiles are applied where necessary
   • Availability of high resolution images is assessed for Open Prepress Interface (OPI) process
   • Appropriate fonts availability is checked
   • All support files are included with the job
3. Output image
   • File is prepared for output to imaging device
   • Job queuing is managed to ensure efficient production
   • Images are outputted to appropriate medium
   • Output is processed according to job specifications
4. Evaluate result
   • Output is checked for correct dot size, screen angles and film density
   • Image elements are checked according to original job specifications
   • Technical problems are solved and appropriate corrections are made
   • Job is prepared for next stage of production

Performance Evidence

Evidence of the ability to:

produce TWO complex images in which appropriate resolution, screen angle and dot type and colour profiles are applied as required to meet job specifications

find and use information relevant to the task from a variety of information sources.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

explain the effect selection of printing process has on output settings for final films

outline methods/procedures available for calibrating an output device

list consequences of incorrect calibration

outline corrective action to take when a file does not transfer correctly

list main points to be checked before sending a job to the Raster Image Processor (RIP)

explain how selection of image resolution is affected by screen ruling

list conditions that cause variations from conventional screen angles

outline checks needed when preparing a job for Open Prepress Interface (OPI)

list consequences for image quality if OPI files are not placed in their correct folders

explain function of the low resolution file in the OPI process

outline main factors that influence processing speed of a job when being RIPped

explain how RIPping speed of a job can be increased

name setting changes needed on the output device when outputting a stochastic screen

outline factors that influence selection of the micron rating of the screen

name main types of file formats and affects selection of a format has on processing of a job
